August 2, 2019
Mano Amiga Philippines is fortunate to have long-time supporters who share in our vision to make quality education more accessible to more children. As Marketing Director of the Blue Leaf events space, Michelle Sandejas helps bring people’s dream events to life and finds joy in enabling them to celebrate milestones in a meaningful way.
We sat down with Michelle to learn more about her life’s why, and how she strives to make a positive impact in the lives of the people around her.
How would you define your mission in life?
I want to improve the current conditions of people who have been afflicted by poverty, graft, and oppression in every way that I can. I believe, as someone privileged enough to have accumulated the fruits of a good education, a healthy home, and a fulfilling career, it is my responsibility to uphold human welfare within our society and provide them the same opportunities as I was given. Personally, as a believer of God, this is my way, my mission of bringing Him closer to us.
Why do you think providing access to quality education is important?
The education that I received was transformative. Every skill and every lesson was executed in a way which made me progress beyond mastery and towards the realization that I have the abilities to effect change in the society I am in. I was exposed to the unjustness of reality, yet at the same time the beauty of encountering and understanding different walks of life. I learned to face challenges head-on, to confidently execute ideas, to assist my family, and a million more things that have formed the woman I am today.
I believe in the power of education and its vitality in the road to societal, political, and cultural development. Especially with war and famine outside our doors, the people of this country need it more than ever. With that being said, supporting a student of Mano Amiga is a tremendous step towards empowerment for their future.
A person’s education does not just come from the school setting. Could you share defining points and moments in your life which you consider as good learning opportunities?
When my dad became ill, I had to look for work to support our family in his place. I had to put my own dreams aside to help put food on the table, keep the roof above our heads, and pay for my dad’s medication. It was one of the most difficult points in my life. But I am definitely grateful it had happened because it gave me the resilience and patience that allow me to courageously face the difficulties I have today.
What is the WHY that keeps you going in the face of challenges?
My faith in God and my love for family. I want to be the best wife to my husband and the best mother to my three children. By bringing out these qualities to the rest of the world, I allow myself to become a step closer to Him.
