Wealth of Ideas: Mano Amiga Open House
Mano Amiga students taught their parents and other guests about health and sustainability in the recently held Mano Amiga Open House. Held twice a year, the Open House is a student-led event which showcases what they accomplished through Project-Based Learning (PBL).
The most notable project belonged to the Grade 5 Class who focused on how to make electricity use in the school more efficient. The students checked the wattage of appliances and analyzed which rooms were the highest contributors to the school’s electric consumption. Using the results of their study, they prepared and action plan and launched an information campaign to encourage energy conservation among their teachers and fellow schoolmates.
Another project that got significant attention was the project of the Grade 6 class who created board games aimed at promoting healthy mental wealth among the elderly. Their project was inspired by their outreach and fundraising activity for House of Somang, a home for the elderly, that is located near the school. Combining what they learned in Araling Panlipunan, Science, Math, and Art, the students created different board games involving different mental exercises that would help stimulate the minds of geriatric patients to help fend off dementia. The class even tested their prototypes through another visit to House of Somang, where residents were happy to play and learn more from Grade 6.
Through another quarter of curiosity, Mano Amiga students were able to explore their ideas and follow their passions for serving the community. Mano Amiga would like to extend their gratitude to parents, guests, and all those who dropped by the Open House.
